Dr. Mohamed Abdel Raouf, Program Manager – GRC Environmental Security and Sustainability Program, participated in the second meeting of the Open-Ended Committee of Permanent Representatives (OECPR 3)

Dr. Mohamed Abdel Raouf, Program Manager – GRC Environmental Security and Sustainability Program, participated in the second meeting of the Open-Ended Committee of Permanent Representatives (OECPR 3) in preparation for the second United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA 3), which took place at UN Environment Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. The Gulf Research Center participated in the meeting in its current capacity as the Global Focal Point of the Science and Technology Major Group of UN Environment.

Dr. Mohamed Abdel Raouf, Program Manager – GRC Environmental Security and Sustainability Program, co-directed and spoke at the West Asia Civil Society and Stakeholders meeting of the UN Environment - Regional Office for West Asia from 24-25 September 2017 in Amman, Jordan. The main goal of the meeting was to prepare the West Asia position and statement for the third UN Environment Assembly that will take place in Nairobi in December 2017.

Dr. Mohamed Abdel Raouf, Program Manager – GRC Environmental Security and Sustainability Program, participated in the International Conference on Climate Risk Management in Nairobi, Kenya on 5-7 April 2017. The event was co-organized by the International Center for Humanitarian Affairs and the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).


Dr. Oskar Ziemelis, GRC Director of Cooperation, Sanya Kapasi and Imen Jeridi Bachellerie represented the GRC Foundation at the final event and meeting of the project.

The three year INCONET-GCC2 Project drew to a successful close in January 2017. Dr. Oskar Ziemelis, GRC Director of Cooperation, Sanya Kapasi and Imen Jeridi Bachellerie represented the GRC Foundation at the final event and meeting of the project. The final event was an International Conference entitled “EU-GCC Research and Innovation Cooperation: The Way Forward” which took place on 29 November 2016 in Brussels and presented the results of the project to about 100 strategic stakeholders from both the EU and the GCC. The conference focused on exploring the way forward in research and innovation cooperation between EU and GCC countries with emphasis on three interconnected axes: i) Supporting bi-regional research and innovation policy dialogue, ii) Capacity building needs and opportunities in the GCC region, and iii) Enhancing research and innovation cooperation between relevant stakeholders, including existing EU networks and the research and business communities. Dr. Ziemelis presented the results of the researcher mobility task to the conference.The GRC Foundation representatives also participated in the concluding project consortium meeting, which took place after the conclusion of the conference on 30 November 2016.

Dr. Christian Koch participated in the dialogue meeting organized by the Center for Applied Research in Partnership with the Orient (CARPO) and the East-West Institute on “Iranian-Saudi Perspectives in ISIS: Exploring Root Causes of ISIS and Strategies to Defeat and Prevent the Emergence of Extremist Organization. Dr. Koch chaired the session entitled “Ideology, Propaganda and Messaging: what is the ideological fundament of the ISIS mindset?” The meeting took place in Brussels.
