Al-Arabia News Channel publishes opinion piece by Dr. Mustafa Alani on Israel and the Syrian revolution: the enemy of my enemy is my enemy, April 17, 2012
In one of those semi-official meetings aimed at determining the stance of the international community on the Syrian revolution, held in a European country, I listened attentively to the Israeli delegate who tried to explain, in the frankest and firmest way possible, the rationale behind his country’s opposition to arming the Syrian opposition. According to him, the Israeli government adopts the principle that the enemy of an enemy could be an enemy, too, unlike the popular saying. He went on to highlight the strategic calculations that made Israel reach this decision against providing any forms of external support for the Syrian revolution. Israel’s security and stability are the only criteria upon which the decision-making process in Israel is based, he said. Different Israeli political factions, he added, do not see any benefit in toppling the current Syrian regime because of the negative and critical impact this would have on Israel’s security and the grave consequences it is expected to produce. Khaleej Times publishes opinion piece by Dr. Mustafa Alani on An unwarranted visit
The timing of the recent visit by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to the UAE island of Abu Musa, occupied by Iran since 1971, has to be seen in its wider context, as well as in terms of the content and language of the speech before the few hundred Iranian settlers of the occupied island who gathered to listen to him. The visit and speech were both provocative and unwarranted. However, unquestionably it is one more sign of the state of nervousness gripping the Iranian leadership since the surprise development of the popular uprising in Syria. The Iranian leadership feels the heat and stands helpless to save its ally in Damascus from the rage of its own people. To understand the cause and the actual degree of this state of panic, one has to appreciate the value of the Syrian regime for Iranian strategic interests. Indeed, the possible collapse of the Syrian regime is a matter of great concern for Iran Read more..
Gulf News publishes opinion piece by Dr. Mustafa Alani on Arm the rebels to end strife in Syria
The current debate over whether it is right or wrong, legitimate or illegitimate to supply arms to the Syrian opposition has moved wide off the mark. The real issue now is whether it is right or wrong to allow a brutal dictatorship to massacre its own people in front of the entire world, and in front of the camera. The situation in Syria has reached a practical and moral dead end. Six months of non-violent popular protest was met with an extremely violent reaction from the regime, and no less than 5,000 peaceful protesters lost their lives in these demonstrations. Secondly, the past six months have witnessed a major shift in the Syrian revolution. The formation of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) in early August 2011 came as a direct reaction to the desperate and hopeless situation that had developed during the first six months of the uprising. Beyond all expectations, and despite the brutal reaction of the regime, the revolution has sustained its force and spread rapidly and determinedly. Read more..
Arab News publishes opinion piece by GRC Chairman Dr. Abdulaziz Sager on Arming the opposition may solve Syrian crisis
During the past few weeks, at least two GCC states have clearly pointed to the necessity to provide the Syrian people with effective means to defend themselves in the face of "the regime's killing machine". The Saudi and the Qatari governments have openly and repeatedly urged the outside world to consider the option of supplying arms to the Syrian opposition. The decision to call for arming the Syrian opposition was not an easy one, nor was this considered an ideal solution;however, the GCC governments were forced to call for this option, because it gradually emerged as the only way to save the Syrian people from the brutality of the regime. GRC releases new analysis titled: A new economic dimension between China, South Korea and the GCC
When it comes to economic ties between Saudi Arabia and countries like China and South Korea, the focus has very much been on the energy dependency that these Asian countries have with the Gulf region, in particular with Iran and Saudi Arabia. The present situation is no exception. With the current instabilities surrounding the Iranian question, China needs to secure an energy source which is less reliant towards Iran while at the same time ensuring its future growth potential. Decisions taken on the international relations level can thus be hard to grasp without a good idea of the trade dependency both countries have towards each other. The same goes for the Saudi relationship with its key customers in Asia. Read more..
GRC releases new book titled: Renewable Energy in the GCC Countries: Resources, Potential, and Prospects
Fast-growing energy needs in the GCC countries are putting pressure on their hydrocarbon resources, the looming shortage of which, coupled with their inefficient use or damaging environmental impact, point to the fact that over-reliance on oil and gas is not sustainable. Against this backdrop, the aim of this book is to help identify the potential role that renewable energy sources (RES) can play in the future energy mix of the GCC countries; it looks closely at the major past and present renewable energy initiatives and policies, as well as industrial and research capabilities in the region, with a specific focus on solar and wind energy technologies. In doing so, this study examines the drivers and requirements for the deployment of these energy sources and their possible integration into sectors as different as electricity generation, water desalination or green building.
